Open captions are the written, on-screen display of what is happening in the motion picture. This helps moviegoers who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Starting May 15, 2022, movie theaters in New York City that offer more than 10 movie showings in a week must use open captions in some of their showings. You can report a movie theater that does not provide open captions in some of their movie showings.

This requirement does not apply to private screening facilities that don’t show movies to a general audience.
