The over-the-counter rapid HIV test is manufactured by Orasure and can be purchased at various pharmacies throughout the City.

The New York City Health Department does not distribute these test kits.

New York Knows is the nation's largest HIV testing initiative. It aims to help all New York City residents learn their HIV status and take full advantage of the City's HIV care and prevention services.

Through New York Knows, the NYC Health Department partners with community-based organizations, community health centers, hospitals, colleges, universities, faith-based organizations, and businesses to:

• Provide voluntary HIV tests to all NYC residents. Testing is done at DOHMH clinics, as well as through partners.
• Make HIV testing a routine part of health care in the City.
• Identify undiagnosed HIV-positive individuals and link them to care.
• Connect at-risk individuals with prevention services, including PrEP and PEP.

You can get testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases at a clinic especially for teens.

At many of these clinics, you can also get:

• Condoms
• Birth control
• Emergency contraception, also known as the morning-after pill

You can get sexual health services at a clinic without your parents' permission or knowledge. Services are confidential, free or very low-cost, and open to all. You will be helped regardless of your immigration status.

On January 1, 2015, City health clinics adopted new health insurance and billing practices in order to comply with State law and Medicaid rules. If you are 19 or older, sexual health clinic staff will ask for your health insurance information or a sliding scale fee based on your income and family size. If you do not have health insurance or cannot pay the fee, you can still get services. Your visit remains confidential.
